genre shortlist

The 3 genres i am considering to use are

  • Horror
  • Action
  • Comedy
I chose these genres as they are statistically more appealing to the younger audience

Macro analysis on Deadpool

Macro analysis on Deadpool =

  • what is the key plot idea introduced in the title sequence? = the title sequence wants to introduce both action and comedy genres by including guns and explosives but also having inaccurate and funny cast names.
  •  what characters are introduced?   when and how? = the villains are introduced at the start which ix obvious as they are in a critical condition. the hero was presented shortly after, i know this as he was in a suit and was in a  position where he looks like he has more power than the villains. he was also in a bright red suit which differentiates him from the villains.

Target Audeince

What is a target audience?

A target audience is the intended audience or readership of a publication, advertisement, or other message. In marketing and advertising, it is a particular group of consumers within the predetermined target market, identified as the targets or recipients for a particular advertisement or message.Businesses that have a wide target market will focus on a specific target audience for certain messages to send.

Why are target audience useful in film?

Whenever people watch a film, they’re looking to find something. It could be something as direct as someone just going to the cinema to watch anything, because they want to. Or they may not even know they’re looking for something – they’re just hoping to find it. Once you identify why your audience is watching your film, you can make some really good choices. You can decide what genre your going to use and what information you’re going to include. You can create and make a list of things you think they'll like incorporated in a film. You can do everything possible to thoroughly please them when they watch your film. Film making takes time. And it’ll take even longer if you don’t know who your audience is. It’s no good assuming things about them. If you create content based around their assumptions, your audience will become lost.

BFI Statistics yearbook

Background information on BFI statistics:
BFI is the lead organisation for films in the UK it was founded in 1933 and is a registered charity. Now the BFI merges creativity, culture and industry role.

The UK film industry:
The UK film industry shares 11% of the global box office due to this the British film industry is a very important part of our economy, its GDP (Gross domestic product) has doubled in the past twenty years to a whopping £2.9 billion. Data from 2013 revealed that films released were watched by the target audience suited for the film such as one direction: This is us, half the audience were aged 7-14.

Genre preferences:
Animation was the most popular type of genre in 2013 in the UK  with action coming in at second and comedy at third.

Audiences in the UK:
Data has revealed that the proportion of admissions for each age group have been fairly similar throughout the time period. However, age 15-24 rose significantly from 26% to 35% between 2005 and 2011.

Genre Preferences

Genre is the type of a film, Within a genre, there are precise sub divisions. This is called sub genre. Every genre has a code or convention. What this simply means is that within the genre there are factors such as props or settings that indicate it to that genre. There are some films that consist of more than one genre. This is called a hybrid genre where two or more genres are used in a film.

Why is genre important within media and film industry?
It sets the standards of whats expected within the genre, and allows the audience to familiarise themselves with the genre. In addition, the genre of a film is also tested to see which audience it brings. This then encourages the producers to identify their target audience as well as what genre they most prefer. The audience can develop personal tastes of which genre they prefer or would watch and which ones they'd rather avoid in order to put their personal preferences in a category.

My favourite type of films are Comedy, Thriller and Horror.

Comedy:
As a result, people can broaden their level of knowledge and talk more about issues with other people. Some comedy movies, for instance romantic comedies, present that information by showing some kind of interpersonal problems and their resolution. An example of this type of film is the movie Bridget Jones Diary. The main character here, Bridget Jones, picks up courage after a depressive time in her life by setting new goals in her life. Her story can help other depressed women realise that they, too, can have options in their lives. The reasons why people want to see comedy movies are the wish to be entertained and also to be informed about something.

Horror:
I enjoy horror films due to the suspense it gives. Viewers tend to watch them as they thrive for the intense scenes of when paranormal activities take place.Viewers watch horror to scare themselves. Horror targets at the ages of 15-25 as young adults and teenagers are more open minded on the idea of scaring themselves.

Thriller
Another one of my favourite genre is Psychological thrillers the reason for this is because it is unpredictable, I like films that make me really think about what is going on. One of my favourite films from this genre is Shutter Island. It got me hooked on right up until the last where it scene where it revealed a great plot twist.

Analysis of film sequence Star Trek: Nemesis

The title sequence star Trek: Nemesis merits the essential members of the team, such as the directors, the company, the production team. Also the roles of the title, sound and settings.

Immediately, from the sequence, you get the idea that the genre of the film is SCI-FI as the film is based in space. Also, the type of music used to be played out is most familiar for a SCI-FI film.

The production team offers a exclusive trend to the film, as at one point, one of the letters enlarges and drags down. This maintains the theme of the film, the writing is shown bigger for the audience to see it clearer and its most visible if its shown in white, as it contrasts within the darkness of space. The slow visuals of titles and scenes in the title sequence, relates to the slow movement of space which emphasizes on the theme of the film. Everything is well structured, as even the main title is presented within the center of the screen, so it acknowledges its priority.

Prelim Film Evaluation

In our Prelim task, we had to look at the different uses of shots, such as the 180 degree shot, reverse shots and match cuts. Our task was to create a short storyboard out of these techniques. The participants were myself, Ibrahim and Sam. We decided to film a young boy attending a waiting room at the doctors with his skateboard, and having to be there with a relative, who wasn't the biggest fan of skateboards.

To begin with, we used a long shot to catch the young boy, who I was playing, limping towards the waiting room with his skateboard. We used a long shot for this to catch my movement well. Perhaps next time we could maybe change the length of the recording, as the long shot did mean we had to wait a little, but that could be done in future references.

The highlight of the Prelim, would have to be the door opening scene, it was very accurate and steady. We caught this with a close up shot, however, later on we went onto editing it extremely well so it looks real enough. This was just a glimpse of what our group was capable of as we've got more to come within the next few years.

At first, I wasn't very sure about story boarding, however, once the acting came into role, I found it extremely useful as it honestly gave me an insight on how it creates the visuals for a film. It helped us as a group to understand the usefulness of the storyboard and how effective it can be during the scenes.

We managed to use as much shots as possible in our Prelim, which gave us a chance to use each shot productively. The wide shot towards the end of the conversation between myself and Ibrahim, created a proportion of tension as we came to the end of a little misunderstanding.

Analysis of film sequence Star Trek: Nemesis

Analysis of film sequence Star Trek: Nemesis

The title sequence Star Trek: Nemesis credits the people who have important roles within the film. this includes the production team, the company, the directors,  settings, title and sound.

The title sequence sets the tone of the film and provides information to the audience in order to provide them with knowledge on the concept of the film. From the sequence it is clear that the film is based around the theme of space and other science fiction content. the audience will get an immediate understanding that the film is of the sci fi genre due to the codes and conventions present within the opening title sequence.

Target Audience

Statistical Research
The British film industry is without a shadow of a doubt the most influential in the entire film industry after the USA who have Hollywood. This has leaded me into doing research on what the British public prefer cinematically and analyze why these movies are successful in the box office. I did this my breaking down the British public into Target markets who have similar preferences due to age, gender, culture, ethnicity and religion.
By looking at and analyzing the BFI statistical yearbook I mange to answer all these basic questions.
The first question is asked was which 3 genres were the most and least successful in the box office? The top 3 was animation, action and comedy and the worst 3 was romance, documentary and war films.
What age were the most had the  most cinema admissions?
The age group was 15- 24 year olds. In the year 2013, the Hangover had the most success with this specific age range.
Which films are the most popular  with both genders?
Men tended to watch  more action, thriller and comedy movies whilst  woman had a bigger range when it came to genre choice. However, romantic comedies as well as animations were obvious stand outs. In the UK woman were actually more likely to go cinema than men.

Which genre had most films made?
Comedy as it is suited to both genders and all audiences.

What is the job of The film production company?
To make a high profit from a good investment by producing a film.

Types Of Film Openings

The rogue experiment leaves Deadpool with accelerated healing powers and a twisted sense of humor. Documentary analysis- How can a film opening attract an audience?

Analysis of film sequence Star Trek: Nemesis

The title sequence Star Trek: Nemesis  captures the production team, the company, the directors,  settings, title and sound.

The title sequence sets the overall tone of the film. From the sequence it is clear that the film is based around the theme of space. We get the immediate idea that the genre of the film is SCI-FI due to the background of the sequence.

The music playing alongside the sequence also sets the tone as i sounds out of this world and most suited for a sci fi film.

The titles in the sequence are lettered all in capitals and each letter is spaced out . This is to ensure and make clear for the viewers to read and engage with the information provided. The titles from the sequence offers a unique tide to the actual film, for example, when the production team is displayed, one of the letter extends and drags down. This emphasises on the theme of the film. The titles also transition is a way where its being slowly brought to the front of the screen or faded to the back. These visuals tie within the smooth transitions made on space. The titles are all bold and white for the viewer to see as it stands out in front of a black background. The writing is large in order for the viewers to see. This impacts the sequence as it captures the viewers attention easily., which could be used to lure the viewers to pay closer attention to the sequence. During the sequence, the actual title is placed at the center of the screen to capture its importance.

Prelim Film Conclusion

In my Prelim for Media AS Level I was given the task to make a short video featuring the 180 degree shot, match cuts and reverse shots of someone walking in a room and sitting down and having a conversation. In my group I worked with Sam, Kim and Deniz. We created a storyboard to adapt to the requirements instructed. The idea was that to create a scene which consisted of a boy and his uncle and film it all within a waiting room.
The shots we used when Deniz was walking to the room was a long sot, which i found simple to film and also later to edit because the shot was clear and did not need movement from the camera. I can improve and develop this skill in my opening sequence by using more equipment such as the  leaver for a smooth panned shot and maybe change the shot due to long waiting times.
What me and my group were successful at was capturing close up shots of Deniz opening the door (hand on the handle) without any faults in the steadiness of the shot and the lighting which is one aspect of our Prelim that I will carry on over to my film opening sequence.
Something important that I found out throughout my piece about story boarding and shot-lists was that it plays a major role in creating the visuals of the short video. By using the technique of story boarding when it came to actual filming I would understand exactly how to film the scene most effectively.
The shot lists that my group created formed a concept of what the prelim would look like, which allowed my group to use each shot as effectively as possible, for example the shoulder shot of myself talking to Deniz created a dimension and essence of tension as the audience was part of the it.

Micro / Macro analysis

Micro analysis on Deadpool =

  • camera (shot distance/ angles/ movements/ framing) = a wide range of hots were used with the opening title sequence but mainly close ups and mid shots were used in order to capture the atmosphere and detail within the imagery. the shots that were used were in a still frame.

  • mise - en - scene (location/ setting/costume/ make up/ props/ performances & lighting) = the opening title sequence was set on a highway where there is an act of conflict going on between the villains and hero. the main character differentiates from the villains due to the costume he is in and his position in the scene. the props used were guns which belongs to the villains, this helps separate the villain from the hero. the villains were in a typical state which is a non attractive and unpleasant state and were also clearly hurt due to the conflict they were in.

  • editing (cuts/ speed/ special effects/ transitions) = the actions within the scenery were moving in slow motion in order to emphasise the content and actions within the scenery and to give the audience a good understating on whats going on.

  • sound (musical score/ sound effects/ wild sound. foley sound) = the opening title sequence consisted of classical music which was is not usual with action films therefore it cross breeds with other genres .

target audience

target audience

every media product has a number of target audiences which can be split into :

  • primary - main audience - direct interest in product
  • secondary - product is not designed for them
  • tertiary - slightly interested in product due to something they know within it.

target audience = a particular group at which a product such as a film or advertisement is aimed.

audience= the assembled spectators or listeners at a public event such as a play, film, concert, or meeting.

having a target audience for a film is useful due to the fact it allows the film to consist of codes and conventions that will mainly apply to that target audience.

i believe comedies appeal to males aged 15 and above. i believe that comedies appeal to anyone from any location and anyone of any profession.

i believe that romances appeal to women aged 21 and above. this is because films that follow a genre of romance tend to be very complex to understand and the scenery tends to be sometimes explicit. females from certain backgrounds and locations may only be interested in romances due to the way they were brought up and their surroundings.

conclusion on opening title sequences

conclusion on opening title sequences

1.    Name of the studio that is distributing the film. for example 'Universal', '20th century fox', 'Paramount pictures' etc. this usually takes up 5-8 seconds of the titles sequence.
2.    Name of the production company responsible for making the film. If an investor financed a substantial portion of the movie, they will usually be credited alongside the production company with “In Association with.” this usually takes up 3 - 5 seconds of the title sequence.
3.    A (Producer’s Name) Production. this usually takes up 2 - 3 seconds.
4.    A Film by (Director’s Name). this usually takes up 2 - 3 seconds.
5.    Starring (this is optional or can be paired with the first cast member’s name), followed by the names of all principal actors. this usually takes up 2 - 3 seconds.
6.    Film title. this usually takes up 5 - 8 seconds.
7.    Featured cast members. A card that states “Featuring” used to be fairly commonplace but now appears to be falling out of fashion; in some cases, to speed up a title sequence, featured players are held off for the end crawl. this usually takes up 2 - 3 seconds for each cast member.
8.    Casting by. this usually takes up 2 - 3 seconds.
9.    Music, composer, or original score. this usually takes up 2 - 3 seconds.
10.    Production designer. this usually takes up 2 - 3 seconds.
11.    At this point it can vary; you might see makeup, costume, or visual effects credits here or skip to the next few credits. At this point it should vary based on what is most important to the movie. If the movie’s a high budget sci-fi bonanza, it’s appropriate to credit the VFX team or supervising visual effects artist here; if it’s an historical epic, costume and makeup should probably get some notice here.

4 different types of film openings.

4 different types of film openings.

my favorite film opening is from the film 'Deadpool'. this is because the opening title sequence uses inaccurate names for the different positions in the film which helps introduce the sub genre of comedy. also the inaccurate names provides laughter and humor into the atmosphere which makes the film much more intriguing and entertaining to watch. the opening title sequence also plays in slow motion which allows me to analyse the location and atmosphere within the first scene which gives me an idea on what to expect from the film. also the title sequence uses a variety of colors which is very appealing to the eye.

opening title sequence for favourite film

Opening title sequences for my favourite 2 films.

Zombieland
One of the joys of watching 'Zombieland' is the way they started off the film with an automatic introduction of the zombies. The opening shows the globe evolving into a 'zombie take over' as its moving around with the earth falling into broken pieces. It then moves onto a mid-shot of a man running away from a zombie on a rugby field, despite it being a moment of horror, it also contrasts with a bit of comedy.

Skyfall

It starts of incredibly emotional, seeing the main charactor 'Bond' drowning in a ocean with the background music of Adele, it really creates something special.  Through the rest of the opening sequence theres mid-wide-shots of 'Bond' in action, his previous flashbacks. This creates excitement as you have insights of what he really was about before. Towards the end, theres a closeup of 'Bond' blue eyes, this could of been to remind us that despite him potentially being gone, he will forever be remembered as a good man within all his films.

Why is sound so important in film?

Blog task 16: Why is sound so important in film?

Sound is a key element in film due to the fact that it adds a lot of realism. In class, we individually watched a couple of clips online, I watched them with and without diegetic and non diegetic sounds. The film we observed was an animated version of Star wars. When I watched the clip with only the non diegetic soundtrack music, it had a big impact due to rising tempo's which forms synchronisation and almost can foreshadow what is going to take place on screen. This brings suspense and tension. However when there was only diegetic sounds, this presents the film to be very boring and plain, I was very confused as to what was taking place on screen, for example the first couple seconds of the clip is just a character on screen , with the ambient sounds removed I couldn't quite grasp where he was or what was really happening. Finally, the final mix with a layering both non diegetic soundtrack and diegetic sound effects brought the clip to life, it added a lot more emotional factors and made it realistic, this allowed me to want to understand the plot significantly more. Another factor is the fact that there was a constant use of a  sound motif of low and sinister music which was played each time Darth Vader appeared. This aids the audience to understand that he is the antagonist of the film.

Why is Sound So Important In a Film?

why Is Sound So Important In a Film?

Sound is used in a film to establish tone, atmosphere and to help give the audience a clue about what the plot and characters are like and the genre of the film.

Star War

the movie that i had analized was Star Wars this had different types of sounds to present the theme, characters and weather.

the effect that the sound had on me whilst watching it was that it gave me a bit of a shock as the sound of the thunder noise is blended in with Dark Vaderentry.

whilst i was watching the video the non-diegetic soundtrack was as if it was telling a story without words. The pitch and the tone of the music presented shows and expressses diffrent emothions.

diffrent sound emotions represent:

fast drum: creates a senareo as if something is about to happen

trumpet: used to show the introduction of something or someones entrence

Prelim and evaluation

39. Jhean Farhiya Niamh Afsal from 283goswellg on Vimeo.

i believe i was good at coming up with such a creative story line even though our group had one setting and object to work with which didn't necessarily fit in with each other.
i believe my acting skills were not very strong as i could of put more effort into the acting and had more practice.
i believe getting a number of different scenes for the prelim was very successful due to the amount of shots we managed to capture and how well they fit in together which created a flow and rhythm within the film.
i think the editing of the prelim was not very successful due to the fact the final film lacked a sense of professionalism. Also the final film had a number of faults such as the timing of the change of scenes and how the film did not consist of any music or sound effects.
if i was to do this again, i would of recommended a much more experienced and confident actor to take part in the acting and i would also choose to come up with a much more unique and entertaining story line.
i have learnt that having a number of different shots and following a detailed shot list is crucial to an opening to any film due to the fact the opening scene of a film helps inform the audience on the concept of the film and what to expect from the rest of the film.

why is music so important in a film?

why is music so important in a film?

the reason to why sound is so important in a film is because it helps give viewers an insight of the genre they will be watching for example, if the film is playing sounds consisting of slow paced and loud music this will mean the film has connotations of horror.

Having sounds also allows the film to build suspense and gives the viewers a certain atmosphere to be in. having sound effects for certain actions makes the film much more realistic and entertaining to watch.

if a film did not have music or sound effects this may lead the viewers to not understand the concept of the film as they will have a lack of knowledge based on the film due to the fact they will not know what kind of atmosphere to be in or mind set to have. for example if they are watching a film with no music or sound effects they will not know what emotions to express or how to react to what is going on in the film. they will also not be intrigued with film as they may start to feel bored when watching the film.

if the film did consist of music and sound effects the audience will have a good understanding on the genre of the film and what type of film it is. they will also know what to expect from the film and how to react as they will have a good understanding on the film. having sound on a film also provides a certain atmosphere for the audience to be in.

the difference of having a film with sound and without sounds is that the films with sounds creates suspense and makes it much more entertaining to watch and easier to understand due to the fact the sound helps support the genre the film is following.  also films with sounds makes actions within the film seem much more realistic and makes them more effective. also having sounds in the film makes it seem much more professional as a film with no sounds makes no sense and makes it significantly difficult to follow and understand.

overall a film should consist of both music and sound effects due to the fact music allows the film to build tension in the atmosphere and helps build suspense. sound effects makes actions within the film seem more realistic and effective as it makes it much more entertaining to watch and much more intriguing.
Why is sound so important in a film?

Sound has a huge effect on the film you're watching, it gives that touch of excitement and thrill, really giving an insight on what type of genre or theme its all set in. It could be either music or a sound effect. Regardless of which one it is, it still provides a better sequence.

For instance, when we watched the clips in star wars with only the diegetic sound effects, i felt as if it had a strong connection between the characters itself as at one point, the thunder and dark vader's appearance created a dark and evil image. It made me feel as if something bad was about to occur.

However, once the music was introduced in the second clip, with the non-diegetic soundtrack, it created tension between everything occurring, although the characters involved cant actually hear it, us as the audience get a real 'oommf' as the different music effects have me more engaged.

The last clip, with the final mix, this gave a whole better concept of what may be happening. This made it easier for us too as it gave us an insight on what the characters are actually feeling and saying which creates a whole better sequence for us to watch.

Gone Girl opening title sequence.

                                                  Gone Girl opening title sequence.

the opening title sequence clearly presents all key characters, the location and key theme of the film. the slow paced music gives the film a mysterious theme which helps present the key concept of the film and an insight of the storyline. the titles are in a capital and bold font in white and most of the titles are on a black background, this is to highlight the actors within the film as they may have a secondary following which then intrigues the viewers into watching the film and it also credits them in general for their work and a participation within the production of the film.

This presents the order of credits in the movie Gone Girl.

The opening of the title gives credits to the company who created the movie, the actors, the director, the producer and the crew who worked on this movie all in order. Gone girl is presented in a way to make the area it is shot in look empty and dead. This may be hinting that the movie may start off simple and empty of people but might contain contain a theoretical twist.

The gone girl title sequence has natural looking, unsaturated colours to make the atmosphere look as realistic as possible to make the audience believe they're about to watch a real life story.

The credits in this title sequence is white so that it does not disagree with any of the background colours and creates a clear and full of life effect; So that it blends with the opening.

analysis of previous student work

                                                    analysis of previous student work

what i like about the opening scene is that it gives the viewer an aspect of the genre it follows and the type of content they are about to see. the slow paced music it uses helps support the horror concept of the film and helps create suspense.

throughout the whole film, the group has used opening titles sequences successfully as they introduce key producers and actors within the film at a consistent and steady pace in an intriguing font and size.

throughout the film the group has used a number of shot angles such as close ups, cut in shots etc. doing this makes the film much more entertaining to watch as it gives it a past paced sense, helps build tension and gives the viewers an opportunity to almost see things from the actors perspective.

.

overall this work is very impressive as their film is unique and creative and has a sense of professionalism to it. the effects they used such as green screen was very creative, also the editing was very good as it was well laid out and detailed. the script was very precise and realistic which made the film enjoyable to watch.

what i like about this certain shot is that it creates a sense of suspense and makes the atmosphere very intense which helps intrigue the viewers.

In most films you will be shown a film title, this is what most directors would tend to do, however some leave it for a little later. Then you will have a introduction of the characters who will be featuring in the film, could occasionally be backed up with music or some type of theme that the film will be played at.
