What are the main functions of an opening title sequence?

In most films you will be shown a film title, this is what most directors would tend to do, however some leave it for a little later. Then you will have a introduction of the characters who will be featuring in the film, could occasionally be backed up with music or some type of theme that the film will be played at. Slowly and gradually it'll give you a brief idea of what type of genre it will be, this will be by the type of tone it sets immediately or by the location its set in.

Ident: This is a famous and popular form of logo, it allows the audience to be aware of what company is behind the work its produced for any future references it may have towards a company of the film maker.

Credits: Allows the audience to know instantly who was part of the productions, such as the producers, directors, characters.

Theme: Gives an insight to what the film may be about, but it never wants to give away too much as it'll ruin the excitement and engagement towards the film.

Introduction: Automatically allows the audience to have the first actual view on what that film is about, could show the location it may be featuring in and even a few characters that will be involved.

Sound and Music: The music and sound can instantly set the mood of the opening sequence. Even without any type of dialogue, it can still let the audience know whats about to come up.
