Why is sound so important in a film?

Sound has a huge effect on the film you're watching, it gives that touch of excitement and thrill, really giving an insight on what type of genre or theme its all set in. It could be either music or a sound effect. Regardless of which one it is, it still provides a better sequence.

For instance, when we watched the clips in star wars with only the diegetic sound effects, i felt as if it had a strong connection between the characters itself as at one point, the thunder and dark vader's appearance created a dark and evil image. It made me feel as if something bad was about to occur.

However, once the music was introduced in the second clip, with the non-diegetic soundtrack, it created tension between everything occurring, although the characters involved cant actually hear it, us as the audience get a real 'oommf' as the different music effects have me more engaged.

The last clip, with the final mix, this gave a whole better concept of what may be happening. This made it easier for us too as it gave us an insight on what the characters are actually feeling and saying which creates a whole better sequence for us to watch.
