what is genre?



  • A genre is a type of film. having a genre helps categorize the film.  
  • a sub genre is the sub division of the genre in the film. 
  • a hybrid genre is when there is more then one genre present in a film. for example a film might mainly follow the action genre but might conist of comdey, romance etc.
  • the codes and convention are things we'd expect to see in a film. for example in an action film you would expect things such as weapons, futuristic technology, a hero and villain and intense background music.
  • genre tropes are specific story elements. 

     genres are important due to the fact they :
  •  help establish differences between different media forms 
  • help establish certain codes and conventions that film makers can follow in order to make the product  look a certain way, achieve a certain effect & attract a specific audience 
  • help to establish certain expectations and familiarity in audiences 
  • help audiences to develop personal tastes around genre and consumption

  • weapons
  • heroes/ villains
  • conflict 
  • explosions 
  • futuristic technology      
the main genre tropes in sci fi films are :
  • futuristic technology 
  • computer generated imagery 
  • space (location) 
  • heroes/ villains 
the main genre tropes in romance films are :
  • couples 
  • conflict 
  • sub genre of comedy
